LG is not alone in readying its first smartphone with a flexible display. It is in a race with Samsung to become the world’s first manufacturer to unveil such a device. Despite LG having confirmed that it is set to begin mass production of its flexible displays, it appears that Samsung may be the first to officially unveil a smartphone using the bendable plastic OLED displays. According to Korea’s Asia Economic, this first device will called the Samsung Galaxy Round.
Samsung could formally announce the Samsung Galaxy Round as early as later this week. It will reportedly feature a display that curves side to side rather than along the vertical axis as LG plans on its own first model.
A filing with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) gives credence to the Galaxy Round name. Dated September 30, 2013, it unfortunately reveals little about the device.
Earlier reports suggested that Samsung’s first flexible display smartphone would be based on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Will it be different enough to merit its own device name or does Samsung have two different devices in the works?
With an announcement rumoured for this week, all should hopefully be revealed soon.
