Market analysis firm IDC has released its latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker and, no surprise, Samsung remains the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer. Overall, the worldwide smartphone market saw shipments hit 237.9 million units, a 10% increase over the previous quarter and a 52.3% increase over the same quarter a year ago.
“The smartphone market is still a rising tide that’s lifting many ships,” said Kevin Restivo, Senior Research Analyst with IDC‘s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “Though Samsung and Apple are the dominant players, the market is as fragmented as ever. There is ample opportunity for smartphone vendors with differentiated offerings.”
Samsung continued to dominate the market. Its portfolio of smartphones, including its Galaxy S4 flagship, now accounts for almost a third of the entire market. It shipped more than twice as many smartphones as Apple, its nearest competitor, and more than the next four vendors combined!

IDC expects that despite the domination of Samsung and Apple, competitors will continue to try to make inroads. The lower-end of the market could prove to be a deciding battleground with large-screen smartphones and other flagship devices set to “establish a presence within the lower-priced smartphone segment as well.”
