As soon as Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Round smartphone with curved display, many began to wonder what markets it would be available in. Samsung’s announcement only revealed that it would launch in South Korea on October 10 but made no mention of any international plans. It now appears that Samsung does not plan to launch it outside of Korea.
PhoneArena has been told by a Samsung representative that the Galaxy Round will be sold exclusively in Korea and that the company has no “immediate plans” to offer it elsewhere.
It’s likely that Samsung is using the Galaxy Round to gauge demand for devices with curved displays. Should it find that customers take to it, it could very well widen availability at some point in the future. It is also possible that it is still ramping up production and may not be quite ready to support several markets simultaneously.
Let’s not forget as well that LG is also planning to launch a smartphone with a flexible display (the LG G Flex?) this year. With production volumes reportedly lower than Samsung’s, it will likely also be a Korea exclusive though.
One thing is sure: Flexible displays are here to stay and even if the Samsung Galaxy Round does not make it out of Korea, we will likely see new smartphones with curved displays hit more markets in 2014.
