The same ETNews report that suggests that Samsung will launch two Galaxy S5 variants in early 2014 also reveals a few details about the next Galaxy Gear smartwatch. It indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will launch at the same time as the Galaxy S5.
Little information is provided about the Galaxy Gear 2 except to suggest that it will be between 15 and 20 percent thinner than its predecessor. A simultaenous launch also would effectively confirm that the two would be compatible (and hopefully more than the two that the original model supported at launch).
This latest report lines up nicely with an earlier one that suggested that Samsung was hoping to have a new smartwatch out in early 2014. Samsung has acknowledged that its first attempt “lacks something special.” According to those earlier rumours, the next model will focus on addressing deficiencies such as battery life and improving the user experience. It may also include new features such as GPS as well.
Samsung recently announced that it had sold some 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches in the first two months it was available. It’s not clear though how many of these have made their way into customer hands and how many remain on retailer shelves.
At this point, it does appear that the next Samsung Unpacked event will feature a number of new devices.
