It was widely expected that Samsung would unveil its first smartwatch at Samsung’s Unpacked 2013 Episode 2 event on September 4th. A senior Samsung executive has now confirmed the rumour. “We will be introducing a new wearable concept device called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on Sept. 4,” said Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, during an interview with The Korea Times.
Lee added that the Galaxy Gear will not have a flexible display but hinted that future models would. Aimed at young trend setters, it will “enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications.”
No details were provided about specifications but, based on earlier rumours, we can expect the Galaxy Gear to come with an OLED touchscreen display measuring about 2.5 inches across and 3 inches when the case is included, a dual-core processor (a 1.5GHz Samsung Exynos 5412?), Google Android 4.1 or 4.2 Jelly Bean with gesture support, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, speakers embedded in the clasp and “pretty decent battery life.”
Lee also effectively confirmed that the Galaxy Note III would be unveiled at Samsung’s event.
Asked about Samsung acquiring BlackBerry or going after its valuable patent portfolio, Lee simply indicated that Samsung was not interested and was “not considering that opportunity.”
