Instant messaging platforms have established themselves as a key communication tool on mobile devices. BlackBerry’s famed BBM platform currently has about 60 million subscribers and more are expected to join when it finally launches its Android and iOS versions. But BBM is facing stiff competition from similar apps. Kik Messenger hit 80 million subscribers this past summer and Samsung just announced that its ChatON platform now has 100 million subscribers.
ChatON is available across a wide range of devices, helping it establish itself as a popular communication platform. Included on most of Samsung’s Galaxy S flagship devices, it is also available across a variety of OS platforms including Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone. It is also available on Samsung feature phones, Windows 8 PCs and even on the web. It also supports 63 different languages to support its global ambitions.
It is also able to take advantage of unique device features in some cases. For example, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 users can create hand-written messages with the S pen. Another example is Samsung’s multi-window feature which makes it easier to drag and drop media files into a chat window.
Samsung reports that ChatON is growing steadily in India, China, and the United States and is “becoming increasingly popular” in Europe and the Middle East.
ChatOn launched in October 2011. It hit the 50 million subscriber mark in May 2013. The fact that it doubled its user base in about four months confirms that the platform is gaining momentum.
