Our smartphones are increasingly becoming the device we turn to to play games. Recognizing that controls on such devices are not always ideal, Samsung today unveiled the Smartphone GamePad for its line of Galaxy devices. Supporting mobile devices ranging from 4-inches to 6.3-inches, the accessory is effectively a game controller that offers “a fun, convenient, and advanced gaming experience anytime, anywhere.”
The Smartphone GamePad comes with an 8-way d-pad, two analog sticks, four action buttons and two trigger buttons as well as both a Select and Start buttons. Measuring 137.78 by 86.47 by 31.80 millimetres and weighing 195 grams, it also packs a 160mAh battery. It connects to smartphones and tablets via Bluetooth. Although optimized for devices running Android 4.3 and higher such as Galaxy Note 3, S4, Note II, and S III, it works with devices running Android 4.1 and up.
Users can also connect Galaxy devices to their TV through an HDMI cable or AllShare Screen Mirroring to play on a larger display when they have the chance.
It comes with a companion Mobile Console app which offers supported games. 35 games are already available. Among these are EA’s Need for Speed Most Wanted, Gameloft’s Asphalt8 : Airborne and Modern Combat 4 : Zero Hour, SEGA’s Virtua Tennis™ Challenge and Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia : The Shadow and the Flame. Samsung also promises that “much more” is to come in 2014.
