When details emerged earlier today that the BlackBerry Z30 would launch in Canada on October 15, one carrier was prominently missing from the list of those who would offer BlackBerry’s latest flagship device. Rogers, one of BlackBerry’s strongest allies, has now confirmed that it will not carry the BlackBerry Z30.
In a statement to The Canadian Press, Rogers spokeswoman Patricia Trott explained that “We believe we can fulfil our customers’ demand for a BlackBerry device with our current lineup.”
BlackBerry Z10 sales started strongly with BlackBerry describing the launch as “the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone.” Rogers itself added that it had “sold more BlackBerry smartphones on February 5th 2013 than any other day in Rogers history.” But BlackBerry was not able to keep up the momentum and it just incurred a US$934 million “Z10 Inventory charge” as inventory piles up at retailers and in warehouses. Even the BlackBerry Q10 is reported to be selling poorly.
Rogers’ statement also indicates that “We continually evaluate which devices to bring to our customers.” This suggests that the carrier could revisit its decision should the Z30 sell better than its predecessor.
