Following yesterday’s report that Samsung was planning to launch two versions of the Galaxy S5 along with a new Galaxy Gear smartwatch in early 2012, South Korea’s ETNews today has more details about the next Samsung flagship smartphone. Early reports about the device spoke about a new “state-of-the-art” 16MP camera module being developed for it. This suggested that Samsung may at last offer Optical Image Stabilization on its cameras. A report today suggests that Samsung has had to once again push out such a feature.
Once again, it appears that Samsung is having a hard time securing sufficient supply of the Auto-Focus actuators. Samsung’s partners have still not been able to improve yields to a level that would meet the expected Samsung demand. Samsung is now hoping to be able to offer optical image stabilization in the second half of the year. If so, the honour could end up going to the Galaxy Note 4.
Samsung may still have some new camera technology to brag about with the Galaxy S5. It is still expected to come with Samsung’s new ISOCELL sensor. This new sensor promises to have better light sensitivity allowing it capture better images even in low light.
Despite the lack of OIS, the Samsung Galaxy S5 could still be an impressive device. Rumoured specifications include a 64-bit processor, Android 4.4 KitKat likely with an updated version of TouchWiz, 3GB of RAM and a 4,000 battery. One version could come with a 5-inch AMOLED display and a plastic body (similar to the Galaxy Note 3’s?) while a second would sport a 5-inch flexible display and a metal body.
An announcement is expected in early 2014 with availability to follow in the March or April time frame.
