Nokia ship 8.8 million Lumia smartphones in Q3 2013

NokiaNokia today announced financial results for its Q3 FY2013. Revenues came in at €5.66 billion (about CA$8.1 billion) and an operating profit of €118 million (about CA$170 million). The Devices and Services that Microsoft is set to acquire saw a loss of €86 million (about CA$124 million).

Nokia’s smartphone sales improved again, increasing 19% over the previous quarter to hit a record high 8.8 million devices. The company attributed this to a “broadened Lumia product range and strong customer demand, particularly for the Lumia 520.”

Sales in North America rose an impressive 367% from 300,000 the same quarter ago to 1.3 million this quarter. They grew 180% compared to the previous quarter.

Timo Ihamuotila, Nokia CFO and interim President, said:

“The third quarter was among the most transformative in our company’s history. We became the full owner of NSN and we agreed on the sale of our handset operations to Microsoft, transactions which we believe will radically reshape the future of Nokia for the better. Subject to the completion of the Microsoft transaction, Nokia will have significantly improved earnings profile, strong financial position and a solid foundation from which to invest.”

Nokia also announced that, starting in the fourth quarter and pending approval of the Microsoft acquisition, it will report its Devices & Services business as discontinued operations.
