Google and ASUS could finally be ready to announce the next-generation Nexus 7 tablet. Citing its usual “industry sources,” Digitimes reports that the launch will take place in late July or early August.
Supporting earlier rumours, the report adds that the new Nexus 7 will come with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, a 7-inch WUXGA (1920×1200) LED, a 5MP rear camera and a 1.2MP front camera. The Wi-Fi-only model is expected to sell between US$199 and US$249. Variants with cellular connectivity are also expected.
While Google and ASUS have reportedly set a target of selling 8 million Nexus 7 tablets by the end of the year, Digitimes suggests that the goal may be hard to reach because of the intense competition in the 7-inch tablet space. With other entry-level tablets selling for US$169 or lower (HP is currently selling its 8GB HP Slate 7 for US$139), the Nexus 7 will not be the cheap tablet that its predecessor was.
The original Google Nexus 7 tablet reportedly shipped about 6 million units since its launch last summer.
