MTS launched its LTE network in September 2012 and has since been gradually building it up. The regional carrier today announced new roaming agreements that will see its customers have access to LTE outside of Manitoba in other parts of Canada, major urban centres in the U.S. and over 200 countries around the world.
“MTS is proud that our customers have the ability to stay connected to LTE while travelling outside of Manitoba,” said MTS President Kelvin Shepherd. “MTS customers can connect to LTE in over 80 locations in Canada, and we are one of only two Canadian carriers to announce the launch of international LTE roaming.”
Roaming voice rates start at CA$1.45 per minute for the U.S. and Mexico. Data roaming prices start at CA$3 per MB for the U.S. and Canada but can reach up to $30.72 per MB when on cruise ships or using satellite hookups. Sending a text message will cost CA$0.75 per message. MTS will also offer U.S. and international data travel packs that allow customers to pre-purchase data ahead of their travels.
MTS will continue to expand its LTE network and hopes to have more than 90 per cent of Manitoba’s population covered within the next five years.

WINNIPEG, Nov. 25, 2013 /CNW/ – MTS, Manitoba’s leading full-service telecommunications provider, now offers customers access to LTE Wireless service in urban centres across Canada. MTS also announced today that customers can enjoy LTE roaming in several international locations, including most major urban centres in the U.S.A.
Long Term Evolution (LTE) is recognized as the gold standard in wireless technologies and provides superior performance while surfing the Internet, downloading content, and streaming videos and music. MTS’s 4G LTE Wireless Network supports average user speeds that are up to ten times faster than MTS’s 4G HSPA+ Wireless Network.
LTE roaming is automatically enabled for MTS customers using the latest LTE devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4™, BlackBerry ® Q10, and Sony Xperia™ ZL. LTE devices will seamlessly transfer to LTE where available.
“Today’s announcement means our customers have the ability to experience the full speed capabilities of LTE beyond the borders of Manitoba,” said Shepherd.
MTS offers U.S. and international data travel packs that allow customers to pre-purchase data they can use when roaming outside of Canada. Added to existing wireless plans, the data packs save money and take the worry out of staying connected when travelling.
MTS launched its 4G LTE wireless network in Winnipeg and Brandon in 2012, and expanded the service to Victoria Beach, Grand Beach, Portage la Prairie, Selkirk, Steinbach and Ste. Anne in 2013. MTS plans to cover more than 90 per cent of Manitoba’s population with 4G LTE wireless service over the next five years.
