The same day that invitations went out to a mysterious Google breakfast event with Sundar Pichai who happens to head up the Android and Chrome OS teams, images and a video of the next-generation Google Nexus 7 tablet have surfaced courtesy of AndroidCentral.
It’s not immediately clear whether the ASUS-built tablet, identified as the ME571K_PR1_SKU2, is the final version of a prototype though. It is very similar to the original Nexus 7 with the same button and port layout but with the new rear camera in the top left corner. It also appears to be a little blockier. See for yourself in this video:
In terms of specifications, here is what the next Google Nexus 7 could come with:
- Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064
- Operating system: Google Android 4.3
- Cellular connectivity: Likely on some models
- Display: 7-inch
- RAM: 4GB DDR3L
- Internal storage: 16 or 32GB
- Rear-facing camera: 5MP
- Front-facing camera: 1.2MP
- Connectors: 3.5mm audio jack, micro-USB
- Other: Dual-speakers
Most specifications fall in line with what we have seen in the past. Only the amount of RAM appears unlikely; 2GB seems far more plausible. As for the processor, various past leaks have gone back and forth between a Snapdragon S4 Pro and a Snapdragon 600. Could the cellular and Wi-Fi-only models sport different processors? It’s not out of the question.
Engadget also landed some OfficeMax internal documents that suggests that stores could start receiving stock as early as July 20th, suggesting an imminent launch. As for pricing, the 16GB model could sell for US$229 and the 32GB one for US$269.
Here’s hoping that all is revealed next week.
