Today is the day that Microsoft bring the Start button back to Windows. It today announced that Windows 8.1 is now available for download. It will be available on new devices and as a packaged edition for retail stores starting tomorrow (October 18). It brings with it quite a few changes. Here are few highlights:
- Users will now have the ability to choose at the Start screen or at the desktop. The former is more customizable with new tile sizes, new background designs and colours.
- Multitasking has been improved. You can now have up to four apps side by side. Flexible window sizing allows you to set the size for each app.
- Improved multi-monitor support
- Improved search with Bing Smart Search
- new and improved Microsoft apps and services including
- updated Mail app
- New Food & Drink and Health & Fitness Bing apps along with updates to other Bing apps such as Weather
- Updated Xbox Music
- Internet Explorer 11
- Redesigned Windows Store with new live tile, personalized recommendations and automatic app updates
- Deeper integration with SkyDrive
The launch of Windows 8.1 also promises that we’ll see a slew of new device announcements in the coming weeks. Among these are new devices for both consumers and businesses from tablets and 2-in-1s, to new laptops, All-in-Ones and specialized industry devices.
Windows 8 users can now download the Windows 8.1 update for free from the Windows Store.
