Microsoft is making progress on who will be its next CEO. Following Steve Ballmer’s decision to retire within the next 12 months, a special committee has been looking to see who would fill his shoes. Reuters today reports that Microsoft has narrowed its list of potential successors down to about eight candidates.
Five are external while three are internal although there could still be more internal names still under consideration. External candidates include Ford CEO Alan Mulally and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop. Among the internal ones are Tony Bates, Executive Vice President for Business Development and Evangelism and former Skype CEO, and Satya Nadella, Executive Vice President of the Cloud and Enterprise group.
It’s not clear who the other candidates are but the report adds that executives from a wide range of sectors, including life sciences and consumer, are being interviewed.
Reuters’ sources add that the process to select the next CEO could still take “a few more months.”
