Here is a development that is sure to surprise more than one. Samsung is set to begin using MediaTek quad- and octa-core mobile processors next year. According to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report citing CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets, a independent equity brokers and financial-services firm, the Taiwanese company will “enter the supply chain of Samsung Electronics” in the second half of 2014.
MediaTek has established itself as a processor supplier in the low to mid-range smartphone market and is quickly becoming a key player in the Asian market in particular. Its processors are now used by a number of Chinese smartphone vendors including Xiaomi.
It’s unclear how this move will affect Samsung’s overall mobile processor supply chain in 2014. The addition of MediaTek could be in preparation for incremental production or it could be that Samsung is set to replace other suppliers.
It also remains to be seen if and when we will see MediaTek-powered Samsung smartphones in North America.
