MediaTek to launch octa-core processor on November 20

MediaTek octa-core SoCMediaTek will officially take the covers off its octa-core MT6592 System-on-Chip (SoC) on November 20. The Chinese company first announced that it was working on an “authentic octa-core SoC” back in July. It yesterday told local media that it is now ready to unveil this SoC and that it will hold the event in Shenzhen, China.

MediaTek was a bit more coy about whether the event would involve handset manufacturers and possible device announcements. Some local media reported that it would demonstrate its new processors using devices from Chinese manufacturers TCL, Huawei and Gionee but it also told the United Evening News that it might demonstrate them using their own solutions.

According to the Central News Agency, MediaTek has about 20 customers ready to use the new SoC in their devices. Among them are ZTE, Huawei, Coolpad, Lenovo, OPPO, Gionee and vivo. Sony Mobile is also rumoured to be among them and could even announce its 6-inch Xperia Tianchi phablet a few days earlier.

The report adds that initial production will be limited but is expected to ramp up in 2014.

Current octa-core processors built on ARM’s BIG.little architecture simultaneously “only” use four cores. MediaTek’s octa-core processor will use all eight cores simultaneously. Given that it will use Cortex A7 cores, it will likely be among the fastest SoCs on the market today but it should still deliver decent performance and be kind to the battery at the same time in the mid-range market.
