Nokia already supports Bluetooth 4.0 LE (Low Energy) on a limited number of Lumia devices. These are the the Lumia 520, 620, 625 and 720. A new FAQ entry on Nokia’s website has now confirmed that the Finnish smartphone manufacturer will extend Bluetooth 4.0 LE support across the entire Windows Phone 8 Lumia range with its upcoming Lumia Black software update.
As the name implies, Bluetooth LE uses significantly less power than normal Bluetooth connections, enabling connected devices and accessories to last much longer, up to months sometimes as the Nokia FAQ points out. This is particularly useful for devices such as heart rate monitors and other sports, health and fitness accessories.
Nokia expects to begin rolling out the Lumia Black update in early 2014. It also includes the Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update and other features depending on Lumia device. For example, Nokia will add RAW support to the Lumia 1020 with the update.
