LG and Samsung are racing to be the first manufacturer to launch a smartphone with a flexible display. Up for grabs are bragging rights. While Samsung is expected to launch a limited edition version of the Galaxy Note 3, less has been known about LG’s own device. According to ZDNet Korea, the new smartphone will sport a concave design and be curved like a banana (according to the Google translation of the story).
The report adds that the device will be known as the LG Z, or perhaps LG Z1, and will sport a 6-inch display. No other details about the device have been revealed yet but it could also come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and LTE-Advanced connectivity.
Just how curved the device will be also remains to be seen. It will be enough that LG expects that the smartphone will feel more natural against one’s face when answering calls. It also hopes that it will improve the viewing experience when watching movies. Here is hoping that it’s not bent as much as the curved LG G2 render above!
Note that neither the Samsung and LG devices are expected to come with truly flexible displays. Both will use the new displays to offer smaller bezels and a curved design but truly bendable devices are still likely a few years out.
The LG Z is already in mass production and could launch as early as later this month.
