Upcoming flagship devices from both HTC and Samsung, the HTC M8 and Galaxy S5 respectively, have been the topic of rumours for weeks already. Not wanting to be left out of the rumour mill, the next flagship smartphone from LG is now also the topic of speculation. Citing anonymous sources, ZDNet Korea this week reported that development on this device is well under way and had a few specification details to pass along.
The next LG flagship smartphone does not have a name yet but could launch as the LG G3 as a follow-up to this year’s LG G2. Expected to launch in the second half of 2014, it will reportedly sport an octa-core processor developed by LG and codenamed Odin. Based on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, reports have suggested it will use four 2.0GHz Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.4GHz Cortex-A7 ones but a recent licensing agreement will hopefully mean that other versions will come with ARM’s new Cortex-A50 series cores. We could find out more from LG about its Odin processors at MWC 2014.
The LG G3 will also sport a 16MP camera. It’s not clear if it will come with OIS but will presumably do so if only because it was included on the LG G2. Removing such a feature could be interpreted as a downgrade, something that LG would likely want to avoid.
As for the display, it will likely be a quad HD (2560×1440) one. No display size is provided but LG unveiled a 5.5-inch quad HD (538PPI) AH-IPS LCD panel for smartphones back in August. LG should be ready to mass produce it by next year if it isn’t already.
It remains to be seen if the LG G3 will keep the buttons on the back as on the LG G2.
