KitKat to be next version of Google Android

Android KitKat statue

Google today announced the name of the next version of Android and it’s not the “Key Lime Pie” that many were expecting. It will instead be named KitKat  after the Kit Kat bar, Nestlé’s popular chocolate and wafer confectionery.

“We couldn’t imagine a better name for our Android K release than the tasty chocolate that’s been a favourite among the team since the early days of Android,” said Marc Vanlerberghe, Director of Android Marketing.

The name is not the only surprise Google had today. It also revealed that the next version of Android will not be version 5.0. Instead it will be bear the number 4.4. Little else has been revealed but Google promised that “It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”

Google Android 4.4 KitKat

Google unveiled its latest Android statue on the same day that it announced that Android has now topped the 1 billion activation mark.

To mark the occasion, Nestle will offer specially branded Kit Kat bars that will ask consumers to visit the website android.com/kitkat for a chance to win prizes including a limited number of Google Nexus 7 tablets and Google Play credits.

There is no word yet on when Google will launch Android 4.4 KitKat but an announcement could well happen within the next few weeks – especially if the next Nexus smartphone launches at the end of August.
