While not quite mobile related in itself, the fact that Kickstarter is set to launch in Canada could mean that the next mobile gadget success story could come from Canada. Kickstarter today announced that Canadians can begin to start building their projects as of today in anticipation of a September 9th launch.
While the general mechanics of how the Canadian Kickstarter projects operate will not change, there are a few differences. Instead of a Canadian-specific Kickstarter site, Canadian projects will be listed in Canadian dollars alongside all other projects. Backers from anywhere in the world will be able to make pledges but payments will be processed through a third-party payments processor rather than Amazon Payments. Fees will be no different than those of current projects:
Kickstarter will charge a 5% fee to successfully funded projects and no fee to unsuccessfully funded projects in the Canada.
Payment processing fees for Canada-based projects are similar to those for UK projects. For Canada-based projects, the processing fees are:
- Pledges less than $10 CAD are charged 5% + $0.05 CAD
- Pledges of $10 CAD or greater are charged 3% + $0.20 CAD
In preparation for the launch, Kickstarter will host a number of workshops this week and next (with more planned) to walk people through building a project.
We are looking forward to seeing what Canadian mobile technology projects will be launched on September 9th.
