Android Jelly Bean (4.1.x through to 4.3.x ) finally overtook Gingerbread back in July. It is now about to make its way onto more than half of Android devices. The latest numbers on the Android Platform Versions Dashboard show that Jelly Bean now accounts for 48.6 percent of Android devices, up 3.5 percent from 45.1 percent only a month ago.
The latest version of Jelly Bean, Android 4.3, has also made its way onto the chart for the first time with a 1.5 percent share. With Android 4.4 KitKat just around the corner, it may not grow very quickly in the coming months. Manufacturers may instead opt to skip 4.3 in favour of going straight to 4.4.
Gingerbread, launched in 2010, continues to maintain a strong presence. It still accounts for 28.5 percent of all Android devices even as it continues to steadily drop.
It should be pointed out that Google recently made changes to the way it calculates these numbers. Since last month, devices running versions older than Android 2.2 no longer appear as they are not supported by the latest version of the Google Play Store app.
