An earlier report that HTC would launch its HTC One Max phablet on October 15 has gained credibility with the date now being backed by The Wall Street Journal. The report, citing “two people familiar with the matter,” also expects that HTC’s latest smartphone will come with a fingerprint reader.
The report also calls into question the usefulness of the fingerprint reader. It’s unclear at this time what functions will be supported by the scanner. For example, could it be used to authorize purchases and other transactions much as the iPhone 5S’ scanner can? Will users really find it useful if it is only used to replace the lock screen?
HTC has sent out press invitations to events on October 16 in Hong Kong and October 18 in Taiwan. The taglines hint at the scanner and Boomsound front stereo speakers:

For its part, Hong Kong online retailer ePrice also indicates that the official launch will take place on October 15 with the other events to focus on specific markets and carriers.
There is no word yet on North American availability but hopefully we will have those details next week.
