Google has already announced the name of the next version of Android (Android 4.4 KitKat) and the FCC has for all intents and purposes confirmed that the Google Nexus 5 will come from LG after all. All we’re missing is an official announcement from Google to shed more light on both. According to Ausdroid, that will now happen on October 14th.
The date certainly lines up with past rumours suggesting an October announcement and Google Nexus 5 availability to follow perhaps as early as October 31st.
The report also indicates that it was indeed the Google Nexus 5 that showed up in the KitKat statue unveiling on Google’s lawn. While there are no additional details about the Google Nexus 5, the report also gives us a list of features we can look forward to in Android 4.4:
- Firmware availability to older phones
- Fragmentation changes (screen resizing)
- Miracast updates
- New Gallery Visualisation
- New APIs regarding animations
- Change android default blue to other preset palette colours
- New notification widgets
That first bullet could be an indication as past rumours have suggested that Google has focused on reducing the requirements for the OS. The report suggests we could even see Android 4.4 on devices as old as the Nexus S.
Nothing in that list also suggests any major changes to Android. This would support Google’s decision to give KitKat a point upgrade rather than jump to version 5.0 as had been expected.
For now, Ausdroid does advise everyone to take the October 14th date with a “large grain of salt.” Sound advice as always when it comes to rumours.
