Another manufacturer is considering offering a Google Play Edition of one of its premier devices. In an interview with Pocket-lint, Kevin Ho, the company’s handset division president, indicated that “We are working with Google to analyse the possibility of bringing out a Huawei Ascend P6 with Google Edition.”
Much like the Google Play Edition Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One which just went on sale through Google Play in the US, the Google Play variant would be identical to the recently announced model except that it would come with a stock version of Android.
Ho’s comments are at odd with statements made by the company’s chairman Richard Yu when the Ascend P6 was unveiled. Yu suggested that Huawei’s Emotion UI came with “hundreds of improvements” and was therefore better than stock Android. As a result, he saw little benefit in offering a Google Play Edition device.
Whether we ever see a Google Play Edition Huawei Ascend P6 remains to be seen but Ho’s comments suggests that manufacturers are at least giving serious consideration to the new program Google unveiled at Google I/O and that we could see further devices in the near future.
