The expectation is now that Google will unveil the next Nexus smartphone alongside a new 10.1-inch Nexus tablet at an event reportedly set to take place on October 14. The Google Nexus 5 is then expected to begin shipping by the end of October. Now a “source familiar with Google” has told TechRadar that the new smartphone will be announced and begin to ship in the last week of October. So, a slightly later announcement but shipments to start as expected.
The report adds that the Nexus 5 will follow Google’s policy of offering well-spec’ed devices at a low price. It could sell for half the price” of the iPhone 5S. Given that TechRadar is based in the UK, it puts the price at about £275 or about CA$460 (US$445). If we use Canadian iPhone 5S pricing instead, the Google Nexus 5 could start at an even lower CA$360 or so.
Considering that the Google Nexus 4’s price started at CA$309 when it first launched, this is a relatively small price increase. With specifications that reportedly include a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snadragon 800 processor, a 4.97-inch Full HD (1080×1920/442PPI) display, LTE connectivity, wireless charging and a 8MP camera with MEMS sensor, Google will likely have another hit on its hands if the price stands.
We should know within the next few weeks what Google has in mind when it comes to the next Nexus smartphone.
