Google announces new Chromebook lineup powered by Intel Haswell processor

Google Chromebook lineup for late 2013

Google and Intel today announced a new Chromebook lineup that will use Intel’s Haswell processors. Made at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, the announcement saw Intel’s Vice President Doug Fisher and Google’s Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai reveal two new Chromebooks from HP, including one described as a “lead design” and a 14-inch display (based on the name) two more from Acer and one model from newcomer Toshiba as well as a new Chromebox from ASUS. Today’s announcement brings to six the number of manufacturers (Samsung and Google are the other two) now offering Chromebooks.

Across the new lineup, the devices offer superb battery life and a variety of new designs—from a light and portable Acer Chromebook, to the large display on the HP Chromebook14, which comes in various colors; from the versatility and portability of the Toshiba Chromebook, to the ASUS Chromebox, suitable anywhere you need a computer.

The Intel Haswell processors promise to improve battery life by more than twice over that of previous generations while offering better performance at the same time. These latest Chromebook will last “almost all day so you can focus on getting things done.”

There was precious little information provided about each new model as well as availability (“the coming months”) and price.

After a slow start, Chromebooks have managed to establish a presence in the notebook market. They now account for up to 25 percent of the U.S. market for laptops that cost less than US$300.
