There are so many versions of Android 4, each often requiring many incremental upgrades, that a source for CNET has indicated that Samsung may skip Android 4.2.2 entirely and jump directly to 4.3 for its Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II devices. The source goes on to say Samsung is not planning another update for these two devices until November or December so that they can upgrade to directly to the 4.3 release.
The tipster also claims that the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note II and the unannounced Galaxy Note III will all be upgraded to Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Of course, these are all unconfirmed and Google has not even officially announced version 4.3. The report supports previous reports that the Galaxy S III and Note II will be upgraded to Android 5.0 along with the Galaxy S4 and, Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Note 8.0 tablets.
Time will tell if these rumors are true, but they make a lot of sense for a number of reasons. It takes a lot of work for a manufacturer to produce an update. Even though Google has not officially unveiled 4.3, we all know it is coming, so why bother with two updates? Lastly, from all indications, Android 5.0 is still quite a ways off, so Android 4.3 will likely be the latest version for a while.
Let us know in the comments if you think is a good move on Samsung’s part and if you would rather wait a couple extra months to jump to 4.3.
