Future Sony flagship smartphone to use MediaTek octa-core processor?

MediaTek chipsetMediaTek, better known for its more affordable processors, has reportedly sent samples of its upcoming octa-core Mediatek MT6592 chipset to a number of smartphone manufacturers including Sony, LG, ZTE, Huawei and Lenovo. Running between 1.7GHz and 2GHz, it has reportedly setting some impressive scores on the AnTuTu benchmark suite. Based on a Cortex-A7 architecture, it will be manufactured on a 28nm node when it starts mass production in late 2013.

PhoneArena conjectures that Sony could be among the first top-tier manufacturers to adopt the octa-core processor in an upcoming device. While the two companies already have an established relationship with Sony using a quad-core MediaTek chipset in its Xperia C sold in China, Sony currently predominantly uses Qualcomm chipsets in its Xperia devices.

As for when we could see smartphones, Sony or otherwise, powered by an octa-core Mediatek MT6592 chipset, it will not be before 2014.

If nothing else, it appears that MediaTek is ready to take on other chipset makers at the high end of the market.
