BBM for Android and iPhone launch delayed by at least a week

BlackBerry BBM

An update today from Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry, indicates that the delayed launch for BBM for Android and iPhone will likely not take place this week. As BlackBerry indicated earlier, the launch delay is due to an unreleased, older version of the BBM for Android app that was leaked and made its way on a number of file sharing sites.

This unreleased version of BBM for Android comes with a bug that creates “volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal for each active user and impacted the system in abnormal ways.” While BlackBerry tried to manage the issue during the first phase of the rollout over the weekend, it quickly realized that the only way to effectively resolve the issue was to block this version out completely. As a result, it halted the deployment to put in place measures to do so.

The team is now focused on adjusting the system to completely block this unreleased version of the Android app when we go live with the official BBM for Android app. We are also making sure that the system is reinforced to handle this kind of scenario in the future. While this may sound like a simple task – it’s not.

At this point, Bocking does not expect that the rollout will resume this week. It appears now that we are looking at a delay of at least a week and perhaps more.

Our fingers are crossed that BlackBerry can implement the fix quickly and that the delay will not stretch beyond a week.
