Apple this week launched its latest holiday ad. Called “Misunderstood,’ it follows a teenager who is more engrossed by his Apple iPhone 5S than the traditional visit to his grandparents’ house for the holiday season. Family events such as decorating the Christmas tree, making snow angels and a night time hike in the snow-covered neighbourhood seem to pass him by as he keeps his nose buried in his smartphone. But appearances can be deceiving as the ad shows.

Unlike Samsung’s Santa Galaxy Gear video, Apple’s ad is far more subtle and does little to promote Apple’s products in themselves. It focuses instead on how the iPhone 5S and other Apple hardware and software, all seen little or not at all in the ad, can help keep Christmas memories alive. It ends up being a far more powerful and effective message.
Apple also released the video within the ad. Needless to say, ‘A Harris family holiday’ was shot entirely with on an iPhone 5S.
