While rumours continue to swirl that Apple is working on a smartwatch, it is not expected until next year at the earliest. One reason for this may be that the company has decided to go with a flexible display for the device. Citing unnamed industry sources, Korea’s Chosun Ilbo reports that the iWatch will use a flexible plastic OLED display. Smartwatches released to date, such as the Sony SmartWatch 2 and Samsung Galaxy Gear, have all come with rigid displays.
The report adds few other details about the iWatch. It suggests that Apple is considering three models with different display sizes. The smallest could come with a 1.3-inch display and the largest with a 1.5-inch one. The third has a 1.4-inch one. A prototype of the 1.5-inch model reportedly already exists. While it is playing with different sizes, it’s likely that Apple will only bring one of these to market.
It remains to be seen who could end up supplying Apple with its flexible displays. Both LG and Samsung are working on such technology and could end up as Apple’s supplier.
