Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tablets now available for pre-order in Canada

8.9-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HDX

Amazon yesterday announced that its latest generation of Kindle tablets is now available for pre-order in Canada. The 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX feature much improved specifications, including high resolution displays and Amazon’s own Fire OS 3.0 Mojito, a modified version of Google Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

“It’s been just two years since we introduced the first Kindle Fire, and we are grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response from customers. The team is innovating at an unbelievable speed, and we’re excited to bring our new Kindle Fire HDX to Canada,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “2.2 GHz processor, 339 ppi display, new 34 per cent lighter design, Fire OS 3.0 and new exclusive features and services. We’ve worked hard to pack this much hardware, innovation and customer obsession into these prices.”

One thing to keep in mind: Canadians do not benefit from the same range of Amazon content as U.S. customers. For example, movies and music are still not available here. Even the App Store does not offer as many choices as it does in the U.S.

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX starts at CA$254 with 16GB onboard. A 32GB model (CA$294) and 64GB model (CA$334) are also available. The 8.9-inch model starts at CA$399 with 16GB with the 32GB model selling for CA$449 and the 64GB one for CA$499. Both HDX tablets will begin shipping on November 26.

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD is also available. It sells for CA$149 with 8GB of onboard storage and CA$179 with 16GB. It will begin shipping on October 24.
