In an interview with the Windsor Star, WIND Mobile CEO Anthony Lacavera today revealed that the carrier now has 425,000 subscribers. This is a sharp increase from the 358,000 subscribers it had last November.
Lacavera also reconfirmed WIND Mobile’s plans to expand further this year. New markets planned are Windsor, Barrie, Peterborough, Kingston and Belleville in Ontario as well as Victoria, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Regina out west and Halifax in the east. An earlier press release also indicated that Mission in British Columbia was on tap.
With a growing subscriber base and expansion plans, WIND Mobile is looking to expand its Windsor call centre. As many as 100 new employees could be hired. The exact number and speed at which they are brought on will depend in part on the upcoming Canadian spectrum auction and the rules that drive it. An announcement by the Canadian government could come as early as next week.
Lacavera had little to say about recent rumours that WIND Mobile could acquire Mobilicity or Public Mobile. “I don’t want to comment any further on that except to say it must happen. The newer players cannot survive long-term on their own, so we must have a consolidation of the new entrants and I think we’ll see that all shake out in 2012,” was all he said on the topic.
