Google unveiled its first Nexus tablet, the Google Nexus 7, last week. It will begin to ship in mid-July but appears to already be running into legal trouble.
A Nokia spokesperson told The INQUIRER that the tablet uses a number of Nokia patents and that none have been licensed by Google or ASUS:
Nokia has more than 40 licensees, mainly for its standards essential patent portfolio, including most of the mobile device manufacturers. Neither Google nor Asus is licensed under our patent portfolio.
Companies who are not yet licensed under our standard essential patents should simply approach us and sign up for a license.”
It remains to be seen if Nokia will take (or has taken) legal action against Google and/or ASUS. It may instead also choose to work with them to ensure that the relevant patents are licensed.
