Sony Ericsson today reported its Q4 Fiscal Year 2011 results. Its last quarter before merging with Sony saw a loss of €247 million (about US$317 million) due primarily to “intense competition, price erosion and restructuring charges.” If there is a silver lining in the announcement, it is the 65% growth in Xperia smartphone quarterly sales compared to a year ago.
Overall, Sony Ericsson shipped about 9 million devices during the quarter, a 20% year-on-year decline and 5% sequential decrease. The decreases were attributed to feature phone shipments. Despite accounting for 80% of total Q4 sales and impressive growth, Xperia smartphone sales could not overcome the overall decrease.
Sony Ericsson has announced that it has now shipped 28 million Xperia smartphones to date. As part of Sony, it expects strong growth in the smartphone market in 2012. Devices such as the Xperia ion and Xperia S and a leaked 2012 roadmap do suggest that Sony could have better results in 2012.
Sony is expected to close its Sony Ericsson acquisition by late February 2012.
