The rollout of the Samsung Galaxy S III Android 4.1.1 upgrade could start as early as the end of this month. Just last week, SamMobile indicated that Samsung was readying the public version of the upgrade. It now reports that the rollout could begin as early as the end of this month both OTA as well as through KIES. Carrier-specific versions will likely take a bit longer though.
The site has also obtained a pre-release version (bearing version I9300XXDLG4 and a date of July 31st, 2012) of the update and has found a number of new features. Among these are a new clock in the notification bar, a “Dormant mode”, some new Live Wallpapers, and the ability to “palm swipe” to take a screenshot.
Adventuresome users can now download this pre-release firmware. It is not without bugs as SamMobile found out: Be warned that it may reformat your microSD card and prevent you from installing certain apps. More risk-averse users should wait until Samsung releases the official version.
Samsung will also reportedly upgrade to Android 4.1 the Samsung Galaxy S II, the Galaxy Note, and the upcoming Galaxy Note 2 later this year.
