Samsung has already confirmed that flexible display production will start later this year. A page on the Korean version of the Samsung Mobile Display website has now revealed the brand name under which these will be offered.
Needless to say, Samsung is not about to reveal its trade secrets but a simple comparison does reveal the key difference between Youm and OLED. Rather than using glass, the flexible display uses a film to deliver a “thinner, lighter, and unbreakable” display.
A US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) application has also revealed the Youm logo in all its glory. Short on details, it does reveal that Samsung could eventually offer Youm displays on everything from mobile phones and tablets to televisions and even all kinds of lights (from vehicles to Christmas lights).
While Samsung has indicated that it hopes to have handsets using flexible displays out as early as this year, it remains to be seen if it will be able to hit this target.
