Samsung has already said that it intends to launch smartphones with flexible displays as early as this year. Last week, it confirmed that flexible display production will start later this year, suggesting that we may have to wait until next year to see devices using them. While we wait, a new Samsung patent reveals how the company plans to use its flexible displays.
A number of form factors are displayed in the patent. There are pull-out displays, displays that bend like books and cylindrical ones.
Power consumption can also be reduced by bending the display. For example, a bend could cut off power to a portion of the display when it is not needed. The power reduction is proportional to the degree of bending and does not require any action from the user.
It looks like future smartphones and other mobile devices will soon be taking on some very interesting shapes.
