When Samsung launched its ChatOn messaging app last year, it indicated that it wanted to make the service available across multiple platforms. Already available for Android, its own Bada, and iOS, a BlackBerry client has now been released as well. The service will compete directly against RIM’s own BBM. While RIM’s service remains extremely popular, ChatON’s multi-platform support may give it an edge (until RIM launches BBM on other platforms?)
While it comes installed on most Samsung smartphones now, its adoption on other smartphones remains a challenge for the company. For example, Google Play shows that it has been downloaded less than a million times since its launch last October.
A more basic version is also available for feature phones, leaving only Windows Phone as they key omission for now. One is coming though judging from the greyed out placeholder on the ChatOn website’s download page.
The BlackBerry version of ChatON is available for free directly from Samsung’s ChatON website.
