Samsung today began to upgrade Samsung Galaxy S III smartphones to Android 4.1. The update kicks off with European devices with Poland leading things off. Samsung also confirmed that the upgrade will be “gradually introduced to other markets” but did not provide any specifics.
The Samsung upgrade also includes a number of updates to its own software. New features include the ability to resize the Pop Up Play video window, a Blocking Mode which lets users block incoming calls, notifications, alarms and LED indicators for a designated period of time, and a pause feature for video recording.
Samsung also confirmed that the upgrade will be provided to the following devices but only provided “soon” as an ETA:
- Galaxy Tab 2 7.0
- Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
- Galaxy Note 10.1
- Galaxy S II
- Galaxy Note
- Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
- Galaxy S Advance
- Galaxy S II LTE
- Galaxy Music
- Galaxy Chat
- Galaxy Ace 2
- Galaxy Beam
- Galaxy Ace Plus
- Galaxy Mini II
- Galaxy S DUOS
Samsung also warns that “The availability and schedule of the software upgrade will vary by market and wireless carriers’ requirements.”
While the less than precise timeline is a bit of disappointment, Samsung still deserves some kudos for bringing Jelly Bean to a wide range of devices, including a number of older and lower-end models (and despite the omission of the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be left on Android 4.0).
