It would appear that rumours that Microsoft would open its first international “Microsoft store” in Canada later this year were correct. The Toronto Star has learned that Microsoft will open its first Canadian retail location at the Yorkdale Mall in Toronto. The building permits necessary for the project to go ahead have now been approved.
If the Canadian store design follows that of similar stores in the U.S., we can expect a similar experience to what Apple offers in its stores. It promises plenty of products to play with – hopefully including the upcoming Microsoft Surface tablets and Windows Phone 8 smartphones.
Both Microsoft and Yorkdale officials declined to comment. Yorkdale is set to make an announcement next week about its expansion project that will add some 145,000 square feet for 40 new stores. The announcement should include the names of a number of several first-to-market and international retailers coming to the mall so we should know more then.
No date when the store would open was given. It is likely to happen before the holiday season though.
