Rumour: Apple iOS 6 to drop support for original iPad

AppleApple is expected to unveil the next version of its iOS mobile operating system later today as its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) gets underway. Banners going up in preparation for the event pretty much confirmed that it would be known as iOS 6. A forum post at Chinese website WeiPhone now claims to have obtained the list of compatible devices both for iOS 6 and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Not listed for the former are both the original iPad and third-generation iPod Touch.

As CNET points out, it is also possible that the list is incomplete or that Apple has not yet provided links for those particular devices.

Operating system upgrades, not just Apple ones, often drop support for older devices as system requirements are increased to support new functionality. In this case, iOS 6 is expected to add features that include a new mapping application that supports 3D (and does not rely on Google Maps), Siri support for the new iPad, and Facebook integration.

Gadgetorama will bring you all the news to come out of the WWDC keynote later today.
