Samsung will reportedly update a number of its higher-end devices (both older and new) to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by the end of the year. According to SamMobile, updates will begin this quarter and stretch into the fourth quarter.
The Galaxy S III will be first device to be updated. Since the first reports in July, Samsung has apparently succesfully tested test versions of the new firmware and is now readying the public version. Once completed, it will require Google approval for the deployment to begin. Samsung expects this to happen sometime in Q3.
Updates for both the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note are expected to follow in Q4. Testing is currently underway and going well. Should further testing not go as well though, Samsung could still cancel the update and instead issue a “value pack” update.
As for the upcoming Galaxy Note 2 (likely to be announced on August 29th), it remains to be seen whether it will ship with Android 4.0 or 4.1. Testing was done with 4.0 so it may well ship with this version with an update to then follow “a couple of months after.”
Samsung for its part has not confirmed its Android 4.1 plans beyond saying that it would “soon” provide an update on which devices it plans to update.
