Research In Motion looked at going private last year according to a Bloomberg report. Citing “a person familiar with the discussions,” the company held discussions with held private-equity firm Silver Lake. The talks never went further as they fell apart after both parties could not come to an agreement on the value of the company.
These discussions took place before current CEO Thorsten Heins took over in January. Since taking the helm, Heins has indicated that any and all options are on the tablet, suggesting that similar talks may take place again or are already taking place.
Earlier this week, RIM formally launched BlackBerry 10, its newest operating system and its hope for a reversal of recent misfortunes that have seen its market share and stock plummet.
