Speaking of sales records, Nokia today announced that it just sold its 1.5 billionth Series 40 mobile phone. According to Mary McDowell, Executive Vice President for Mobile Phones at Nokia: “We are incredibly proud to reach this milestone. Having 1.5 billion Series 40 devices sold is a hard-to-reach mark, let alone one attainable in a single line of products.”
Nokia added that it estimates that some 675 billion S40 phones are still in use today. It also sells 12 new ones every second. Despite being focused on Windows Phone now, it also expects to sell another billion S40 devices in the upcoming years.
The first Series 40 phone, the Nokia 7110, was released in 1999. They have evolved quite a bit since then, blurring the line between feature phones and smartphones in many ways. In fact, some 3.7 million app downloads take place on Series 40 phones every day.
