One victim of Nokia’s new corporate strategy and cost savings initiatives appears to be its Linux-based Meltemi operating system. The project, which had never been confirmed by Nokia, was meant to develop a new mobile operating system for feature phones.
Nokia will continue to focus on its Series 30 and Series 40 low-end smartphone platforms (including a new Asha Touch line). It is also working with Microsoft in an effort to bring Windows Phone to even lower price points than seen to date with the Nokia Lumia 610.
The development of Meltemi had been headed up by Mary McDowell, Nokia’s Executive Vice President, Mobile Phones. McDowell was among the executives leaving Nokia as part of today’s management shuffle.
While Meltemi will never see the light of day, elements of the operating system may be incorporated into other projects.
