Much has been said and seen recently about the alleged larger display and physical changes coming to the next iPhone. Digging into a beta version of iOS 6, 9to5Mac has found some some new information about what could be under the hood.
First up, the iPhone 5 could sport a new processor, the ARM S5L8950X. The number of cores and clock speeds are not yet known but it will likely offer better performance than the S5L8940X on the current iPhone and the new iPad’s S5L8945X. Apple refers to the processor as the “A5-***” suggesting it is another dual-core iteration rather than a quad-core one that would likely get the A6 moniker. Like the other older processors, it is likely manufactured by Samsung.
The new processor will be accompanied by a new GPU identified as “SGX543RC*.” No such processor exists today. No details are available about it yet.
The new iPhone also looks set to get a RAM upgrade from 512MB to 1GB.
9to5Mac‘s source adds that Apple is well into the development of iOS 6 and that an October launch should be easy to achieve.
