Motorola’s updated list of devices scheduled to receive Android 4.0 upgrades shows some 11 smartphones and tablets. There are some popular device omissions, such as the Verizon DROID X2 which is about a year old. Motorola has now issued a statement to explain how devices made (or failed to make) the list:
“You may be wondering why all devices aren’t being upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Here’s the deal. We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.”
Many devices that will not receive the Android 4.0 upgrade are still in line to receive updates to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or bug fix releases. I suspect a few will also root their devices and install a customized ROM.
